Coco peat, coco pith and coir pith
You will see all three names when you search. They mean the same material: the spongy pith left when fibre is separated from coconut husk. Cocopeat is the same word spelled differently. Searching for each name will show you more suppliers, but the product is the same.
Manufacturer or trader?
Both can be useful, but they are not the same.
A manufacturer runs the process: separation, washing, drying, sieving and pressing. They can explain how the material was made and change it to your specification.
A trader buys from manufacturers and sells on. They can offer range and convenience, but may know less about a particular batch.
If consistency matters to you, ask directly: where is your unit, and which stages do you run yourself?
What to check with any supplier
- Washing. For Low EC material, ask whether they wash in-house, and how EC is checked afterwards.
- Specification. Ask for written figures for EC, pH, moisture, expansion and fibre, by grade.
- Testing. Ask what is tested and how it is measured.
- Capacity. Ask whether they can keep supplying the volume you need.
- Samples. Test the material before you order a container.
- A visit. If you can, see the unit in person. The yard, the washing area and the stock tell you a lot.
