Why SM Coir
SM Coir has spent over 20 years in the coir industry. Our units in Pollachi manufacture coco pith and coco peat, wash it on our own washing beds, then screen, grade and press it into 5 kg blocks, so every container carries material made to the same specification.
Products
Both are 5 kg blocks pressed from screened pith at 5:1, each in Fine, Standard and Coarse grades. The difference is how far the EC is brought down first.

Washed to bring EC below 0.6 mS/cm, for nursery propagation, potting, greenhouse and hydroponic growing.

Unwashed pith for horticulture, agriculture, lawn and landscape work where EC is less critical.

Manufacturing process
At SM Coir, every stage of production is designed to prepare, process and compress coco peat into blocks that meet the required product specifications for bulk supply. Manufacturing capacity: 500 MT per month.

Coconut husks and coir raw materials are collected and prepared for processing, forming the foundation of the coco peat production process.

Raw material is processed to separate coir fibres from coco peat pith and other coarse components.

For the Low EC grade, pith is washed on our own washing beds to bring the EC down before it moves on.

Pith is spread across the open yard and dried as required before screening.

The material is screened to the required particle size, 6 mm, 8 mm or unsieved, separating unwanted coarse material.

Prepared coco peat is pressed at 5:1 into 5 kg blocks of 30 × 30 × 10 cm, to the grade and expansion specification.

Finished blocks are checked against the specification, then loose-stuffed into the container for dispatch to commercial buyers.
Quality & testing
Finished coco peat blocks are tested for EC, pH, moisture, expansion volume and impurities before they are packed.

Each product comes in three grades: 1st grade Fine, 2nd grade Standard and 3rd grade Coarse. They differ in expansion volume, moisture and fibre content. All grades share the same 30 × 30 × 10 cm block, 5:1 compression and pH of 5.5 – 6.5.
Low EC blocks are washed to bring EC below 0.6 mS/cm, for propagation, greenhouses and hydroponics. High EC blocks are unwashed, for horticulture, agriculture and landscape work where EC is less critical. Low EC also expands slightly more: 16, 13, 10 L per kg against 14, 11, 9 L per kg.
