Coco Peat Manufacturing Process Explained

How coconut husk becomes a compressed 5 kg coco peat block, step by step, from raw husk and pith separation to washing, drying, sieving and compression.

By SM Coir ·

Coco peat, also called coir pith or coco pith, is the spongy material left behind when fibre is separated from coconut husk. Turning it into a consistent, compressed block takes several controlled stages. Here is how the process works at our units in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu.

1. Raw husk

Coconut husks and coir raw materials are collected and prepared for processing. The condition of the incoming material is the first thing to check, because everything that follows depends on it.

2. Pith separation

The raw material is processed to separate coir fibres from the pith and other coarse components. The fibre goes one way and the pith, which becomes coco peat, goes the other.

3. Washing

This is where Low EC and High EC material part ways. Coconut husk naturally contains soluble salts. For the Low EC block, pith is washed on our own washing beds to bring the EC down before it moves on. The High EC block skips this stage.

4. Drying

The pith is spread across the open yard and dried as required before screening. Moisture content is checked here, because it affects both how the material sieves and how the block performs later.

5. Sieving

The material is screened to the required particle size, either 6 mm, 8 mm or unsieved, removing unwanted coarse material. Particle size and fibre content are checked at this stage, and this is what separates the Fine, Standard and Coarse grades.

6. Block compression

The prepared coco peat is pressed at 5:1 into 5 kg blocks measuring 30 × 30 × 10 cm. Compression is what makes coco peat practical to ship: the material takes up a fraction of its loose volume in transit, then expands again when water is added.

7. Packing and dispatch

Finished blocks are checked against the specification, then loose-stuffed into the container for dispatch to commercial buyers. Each 40 ft container holds 5,000 blocks.

Quality checks along the way

Checks run through the process, not only at the end. Finished blocks are tested for EC, pH, moisture, expansion volume and impurities. You can see photos of these checks on our quality and testing page.
