Two 5 kg blocks can look the same and behave very differently. Before you place a bulk order, check these points and ask your supplier to put the figures in writing.
Numbers to ask for
| Check | Why it matters | SM Coir specification |
|---|---|---|
| EC | Shows the salt level in the media | Low EC: below 0.6 mS/cm |
| pH | Affects nutrient uptake | 5.5 – 6.5 |
| Moisture | Water adds weight but no volume | 10 – 15% Fine, 15 – 25% Standard and Coarse |
| Expansion | How many litres you actually get | 9 – 16 L per kg, by product and grade |
| Fibre | Affects structure and drainage | Below 2%, 7% or 15%, by grade |
| Block size | Affects stacking and handling | 30 × 30 × 10 cm |
| Compression | Affects freight and rehydration | 5:1 |
| Sieve | Affects filling and flow | 6 mm, 8 mm or unsieved |
Questions worth asking
- Is it washed? Low EC material should be washed. Ask where and how.
- Is it buffered? Washing and buffering are different. Ask if your crop or system needs it.
- How are EC and pH measured? Different extraction methods give different numbers, so compare suppliers on the same method.
- Is the supplier the manufacturer? A manufacturer can tell you how the material was made. A trader may only be able to pass on what they were told.
- How is it packed? Our blocks are loose-stuffed into the container.
- What is the minimum order? Ours is one 40 ft container, which holds 5,000 blocks.
How to check a sample
A sample tells you more than a brochure.
- Weigh it. Note the weight as received.
- Measure it. Check the block dimensions.
- Expand it. Add water, break it up and measure the volume. See how to calculate expansion volume.
- Test EC and pH. Use calibrated meters. Our guide on EC and pH shows how.
- Look at it. Check for foreign material, excess fibre and uneven particle size.
- Grow in it. Run a small trial with your own crop and irrigation.
Keep your readings. They give you something to compare each delivery against.
Compare on more than price
Coco peat is usually priced per metric tonne, but you plant in litres. A block that costs less per tonne can cost more per litre if it expands less or carries more water. Compare suppliers on the finished volume and quality you get, not only the headline price.
