SM Coir supplies each coco peat block in three grades: 1st grade Fine, 2nd grade Standard and 3rd grade Coarse. They all come in the same 5 kg block, so the choice is about what is inside the block, not its size.
What changes between grades
| Grade | Moisture | Fibre | Low EC expansion | High EC expansion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fine | 10 – 15% | Below 2% | 16 L per kg | 14 L per kg |
| Standard | 15 – 25% | Below 7% | 13 L per kg | 11 L per kg |
| Coarse | 15 – 25% | Below 15% | 10 L per kg | 9 L per kg |
Fine material has the least fibre and gives the most volume per kilo. Coarse has more fibre and gives less volume. As a general rule in growing media, finer material holds more water and coarser material drains more freely and lets in more air.
Which grade suits which use
These are starting points, not rules. Your crop, climate and irrigation all matter.
| Use | Usual starting point |
|---|---|
| Propagation trays and seedling mixes | Low EC, Fine |
| Seed germination | Low EC, Fine or Standard |
| Greenhouse grow bags and troughs | Low EC, Standard or Coarse |
| Hydroponics | Low EC, Standard or Coarse |
| Floriculture | Low EC, Standard or Coarse |
| Horticulture and bed preparation | Low EC or High EC, Standard |
| Open-field soil conditioning | High EC, Coarse |
| Blending potting mixes | Either product, any grade, sieved to spec |
Sieve size is a separate choice
Grade and sieve size are not the same thing. Blocks are available at 6 mm, 8 mm or unsieved. If your trays are small or your filling machine needs consistent flow, mention the sieve size you want in your enquiry.
How to test a grade
Reading a table only goes so far. Before a bulk order, expand a sample and try it in your own system. Check how it fills your trays or bags, how fast it drains and how it behaves under your irrigation. You can request a sample of either product.
