Importing coco peat blocks is straightforward when the specification, shipping terms and paperwork are agreed before the order. Use this as a checklist. Rules differ by country, so confirm the details with your customs broker and your national plant-health authority.

1. Agree the specification

Put the numbers in writing before you discuss price:

  • Product: Low EC (washed) or High EC (unwashed)
  • Grade: Fine, Standard or Coarse
  • EC, pH, moisture and expansion figures, and how they are measured
  • Block size and weight
  • Sieve size
  • Whether you need buffered material

Read what to check before buying a 5 kg coco peat block for a full list.

2. Test a sample

Test before committing to a container. Expand the sample, measure it and trial it with your crop or blend. You can request a sample from SM Coir.

3. Plan the container load

Our 5 kg blocks are loose-stuffed, stacked directly into the container, with 5,000 blocks to a 40 ft container. Ask your supplier to confirm the exact load, and check that your receiving site can unload it.

4. Agree the shipping terms

Incoterms decide who pays for freight and insurance and where responsibility passes from seller to buyer. FOB and CIF are common examples. Be clear about which term applies, which port the goods leave from and your destination port.

5. Check your country’s import rules

Coco peat is a plant-derived product, so some countries control it closely. Before ordering, find out:

  • Whether you need an import permit
  • Whether a phytosanitary certificate is required
  • Whether any treatment or inspection applies on arrival
  • How your customs broker classifies the product and what duty applies

Do this early. A shipment held at the port is expensive to resolve.

6. Confirm the documents

Ask your supplier which documents they will provide, and match them against your broker’s list. Typical shipping documents include a commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading, plus any certificates your country requires.

7. Agree payment

Payment terms are confirmed on the quotation. Make sure they line up with your shipping term and your bank’s requirements.

8. Check the shipment on arrival

Inspect a sample of blocks from different parts of the load when it arrives. Check weight and dimensions, then expand a few blocks and test EC and pH using the same method you used for the original sample.
