In a commercial greenhouse the growing media is the root zone for the whole crop, and problems are expensive to fix once plants are in. A specification sheet is how you check the material before it reaches your bags, troughs or benches.
The numbers that matter most
EC. For greenhouse crops, start with washed, Low EC media so your feed controls what reaches the roots. Our Low EC block is below 0.6 mS/cm.
pH. Our blocks are specified at 5.5 – 6.5, the range commonly targeted in soilless growing.
Expansion. This tells you how many litres you get per kilo, which sets your cost per grow bag. Our Low EC block gives 16, 13 and 10 L per kg, Fine to Coarse.
Moisture. Water adds weight without adding volume. See how moisture affects quality.
Fibre and particle size. These shape the structure of the media. Grades carry fibre below 2%, 7% and 15%, and sieve options are 6 mm, 8 mm or unsieved.
Which grade for greenhouse use
For grow bags, troughs and benches under cover, the usual starting point is Low EC in Standard or Coarse. Fine suits propagation trays. Trial more than one grade if you can, because your irrigation pattern and crop will decide what works best.

Questions beyond the basic sheet
Some figures matter a lot in greenhouse growing but are not on every specification sheet, including ours. If your system depends on them, ask your supplier directly, and test a sample with your own advisor:
- Buffering. Washing removes soluble salts. Buffering is a separate treatment. Tell us if your crop needs it.
- Air-filled porosity and water-holding capacity. These describe how the media holds air and water.
- Sodium and chloride. Ask for these if your water quality or crop makes them a concern.
- Batch records. Ask how a delivery can be traced back to its batch.
We would rather say what is not on our sheet than guess. You can ask us about any of these in your enquiry.
Trial before you commit
Before filling a whole greenhouse, run a trial row. Compare drainage, root development and drain EC against your current media.
