The difference between Low EC and High EC coco peat comes down to one step in production: washing. EC stands for electrical conductivity, and it shows how much soluble salt is in the material. Coconut husk naturally carries salts, so pith that has not been washed reads higher than pith that has.
That one step decides which crops the block suits and how much care it needs before use.
How the two blocks differ

Both blocks are compressed at 5:1 and come in Fine, Standard and Coarse grades. Apart from the salts, the practical difference is a little extra expansion from the Low EC block.
When to choose Low EC
Young roots are sensitive to salt, so Low EC is the usual choice wherever the crop starts life in the media or depends on it completely:
- Nursery propagation trays and seedling mixes
- Seed germination
- Greenhouse grow bags and troughs
- Hydroponic and other soilless systems
In these systems the grower wants to control what reaches the roots through the feed. A low starting EC leaves room to do that.
When to choose High EC
High EC blocks suit work where salts are less critical and can move away with irrigation or rain:
- Soil conditioning in open-field beds
- Landscape and lawn work
- Horticulture and bed preparation, where the crop is not sensitive
Because it skips the washing stage, High EC is often the practical choice for these uses.
A simple way to decide
Ask two questions. Will young or sensitive roots sit directly in this media? Will you be feeding the crop through a controlled nutrient solution? If either answer is yes, start with Low EC. If the material is going into open ground to improve soil, High EC is usually enough.
